Capanna Osola

HISTORY

“I don’t know the history of these mountains. I don’t know the story of who has come to inhabit them. But I do know that between the thousands of years passed and those to come, these rocks and these waters were for a moment beatitude in a human soul” (Anna Gnesa - Lungo la strada)

History

The Osola mountains, once the summer pastures for cows and goats, lost much of their importance to farming with the advent of the economic boom; today, they are used for sheep and goats to graze freely, and during the summer months for 30 or so dairy cattle.

The unspoiled beauty of the area, the relative ease of the path running along the bottom of the valley and the ability to stay overnight, combined with the onward walks or longer hikes, soon established the popularity of the building, now regularly visited from early spring until late autumn.

Over the last ten years the region, with its pristine nature, has become even more appealing due to walking tourism, which led the owners to decide (with the 1985 reconstruction of the current hut) to continue to offer a place of refuge at the head of the valley and to provide further shelter higher up, at the Sambuco Shelter.

Co-owners

The roots of the Comunità Alpe Osola were formed long ago, and the community and is made up of Brione families with close ties to farming. These families, who own grazing rights, were able to make use of the natural resources in the limited area in the upper Valle Osola, in accordance with an ancient law that granted these rights.

Nowadays, this group no longer depends on the area for their livelihoods (although part of it is still used for livestock). The Comunità Alpe Osola acts according to its own specific statute, the aim of which is the active conservation of the properties for which it is still responsible today.

Associazione Amici dell’Osola

The Associazione Amici dell’Osola was formed in 2019 for the purpose of managing the Osola Hut and the Sambuco Shelter. Made up of volunteers who were previously involved in the ordinary running of the two buildings, the association unites those who are passionate about the mountains and who have a connection with this beautiful area. It is committed to ensuring continuity of these important mountain buildings with enthusiasm and enormous motivation, working dynamically and proactively towards the future.

Attualmente il Comitato è composto da: Andrea Bisi (President), Nicola Kritikos (Vice-President), Sabina Matasci (Secretary), Geremia Bisi, Stefania Bisi, Leonardo Martella and Cedric Titocci (Members)
